Chapter 36 - THE FLIES - Evelyn

Jim explores the now empty Lunghua Camp, viewing himself from Mrs.Vincent's angle in their old room at one point. As he enters the hospital, flies envelop his face and Jim sees the flies chewing at the flesh and guts of the deceased patients. Jim leaves and is about to eat some tomatoes when he remembers his fear that his soul had died at Nantao, and so he wonders if feeding his body will engorge it like the corpses in the hospital. Instead, Jim feasts on his spam on the assembly hall balcony while overlooking the barter between wine and cigarette's. While the Britons get drunk, Jim thinks about those who have died and after choosing to ignore the rowdy Price, Jim rests his gaze on the young Japanese pilot searching the derelict aircraft, stick in hand, 400 yards away on the airfield runway.
